About the Work partnered with East Harlem Tutorial Program to transform a church campus into a new high school as aspirational in its design as its community is for its purpose. When complete, the 65,000 SF high school will house a full-sized gym, a black box theater, a college access suite and an educational space for its 600 students. Deftly jumping through every hoop the Department of Buildings and the NYC Board of Standards and Appeals could hurl our way, AtW stuck the landings, navigating a ground-up new construction in Manhattan during the COVID-19 pandemic and assembling a world-class design and construction team to do it. This project gave AtW the space to do what we do best on a uniquely challenging site and approval process. Successfully meeting these premium deliverables in service to a historically underserved community was deeply rewarding.
