The first purpose-built high school to rise in East Harlem in decades, this project marked a major milestone for the community, East Harlem Scholars Academies, and AtW. AtW served as the owner’s representative for the planning, design, and construction of the new facility, guiding the process from early planning and real estate negotiations through zoning and community approvals, design, and construction. We oversaw the competitive design team selection, bringing on Ennead Architects, and worked closely with them to align the program and budget with educational and operational goals.
The resulting campus includes flexible classrooms, science and art labs, a black box theater, administrative space, and a full size gymnasium. Construction advanced through the COVID-19 pandemic, and AtW maintained steady oversight of cost, schedule, and risk throughout, culminating in a permanent home for over 600 students annually that reflects their aspirations and identity.
